Daze - Rock Against Mandatory Sentencing
NoKTuRNL will be one of eleven NT bands from all over the territory performing at the 14 Daze anti mandatory sentencing concert to be held at Browns Mart on Friday the12th of May. NoKTuRNL feel strongly that these laws end up being discriminatory and racist in their impact. Both the Northern Territory and Federal governments should be ashamed by the number of Aboriginal people in jail, instead of putting in place laws that result in greater levels of incarceration. NoKTuRNL, a three piece from Alice Springs, have been critically acclaimed as one of the hottest new Australian bands. Their music has been described as full tilt in your face metal/blue/hip hop/core. NoKTuRNL's debut single Neva Mend has received very wide coverage and glowing reviews. It's release followed their blowout performances on this years national Big Day Out tour. They followed this up with a national tour with the Rollins Band. If you've missed this storm from the desert setting fire where ever they go, you've been out of touch. Also travelling from Alice Springs for the show will be singer songwriter Leon Spurling. Leon has released several CD's independently which have received great reviews from the mainstream music press. Juice Magazine in giving him a 7 out of 10 rating, described his music as being somewhere between the wistfullness of Crowded House and the down home feel of Wilco. His music is personal and challenging, with strong lyrics about his own experiences and soul wrenching vocals - carved into melancholy acoustic guitar work. Dealing with a wide range of issues, from loss and anger, to hope and optimism, Leon spices his tales with humor and sarcasm. A lot of people can relate to Leon and he has proved immensely popular - live and on recordings. Even the most jaded, desensitized punters have credited Leon as a formidable talent and an interesting change for Australian music. Delve into Leon's maelstrom. You can find out more about both NoKTuRNL and Leon Spurling by checking out their web sites; www.nokturnl.com and www.leonspurling.com You can also find out more about mandatory sentencing by checking out the link from NoKTuRNL's site to that of Territorians for Effective Sentencing (http://ms.dcls.org.au) The 14 Daze concert is being put on by the Darwin Community Legal Service, in conjunction with ATSIC and NAALAS.
